Bergen Blue Laws Come Into Question

Posted on | April 11, 2010 | View Comments

For the past 50+ years Bergen County has shut down on Sundays. Bergen’s blue laws are unique to the area and offer, to some, a reprieve from the traffic, noise and general hectic nature of Saturday’s business hours. In an effort to plug a budget hole, NJ Governor Christie has suggested doing away with these laws. The proposal states that the extra day of business would shore up the necessary revenue.

Not surprisingly, many residents are not thrilled with this decision. Some have gone so far as to put up a website and petition to attempt to halt this plan here: http://www.keepbergenbluelaws.com/ .

Where do you stand on this issue? Should we keep our blue laws or should we repeal them and open businesses up on Sundays? Tell us in the comments.

  • This topic has really touched a nerve with folks on this blog and on the LinkedIn group page. Interesting. Not sure where I stand on this. Would like the convenience but the noise on sunday would suck.

Please, please get rid of these outdated Christian laws! Let's bring Bergen into the 21st century. Everyone should have the freedom to schedule their weekend according to their own family's activities. Supporters of blue laws do what *they* want to do on Sunday, but I cannot! I'm sure the Saturday traffic would not be as epic if Sunday was also open for business. Every single person is running around on Saturday. It's outrageous that these discriminatory laws have continued to exist. It is time to end them.
    (btw, I'm Christian).

Do not repeal the Blue Laws. I enjoy the quiet on Sundays and the ability to drive through Paramus without getting stuck in traffic. My family does not need to shop 7 days a week!
